The FBI has issued a warning regarding a new Remote Access Trojan (RAT) malware known as HiatusRAT. This malicious software is targeting Chinese-branded web cameras and DVRs used by Western companies, allowing hackers to take control of devices remotely. The primary targets seem to be US government organizations, with the malware being used for espionage purposes. Vulnerabilities in web cameras and DVRs with known security flaws, particularly those from vendors such as Xiongmai and Hikvision, are being exploited. The attackers are scanning for IoT devices in various countries, looking for devices with weak passwords and specific vulnerabilities. The FBI has identified the use of off-the-shelf scanning tools such as “Ingram” and authentication cracking tools like “Medusa”. This latest threat underscores the importance of having robust cybersecurity measures in place to protect against such malware attacks.
