Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reached out to President-elect Donald Trump, urging him to intervene and prevent the European Union from imposing hefty fines on US companies for breaching antitrust and data protection laws. Zuckerberg expressed concerns on a podcast, highlighting the importance of safeguarding American tech giants. Meta has already been slapped with billions in fines due to GDPR violations, and Zuckerberg likened EU regulations to tariffs on US firms, aligning with Trump’s protectionist stance. If Trump considers Zuckerberg’s plea, US companies could evade stringent EU rules, enhancing their competitive edge but risking exclusion from the European market. In an attempt to solidify ties with the incoming administration, Meta donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund. Moreover, in a strategic pivot, Facebook and Instagram are phasing out fact-checking services due to perceived bias, steering towards a community notes approach. Despite opposition from UK’s tech secretary, Peter Kyle, concerning online regulations, Zuckerberg remains resolute in his push for less restrictive online environments.
