A recent cyberattack on education technology software firm PowerSchool has revealed a more extensive data breach than initially reported. In December 2024, threat actors accessed the PowerSchool student information system using stolen credentials, leading to the theft of data on students and teachers. The stolen information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical information, grades, and more.

Although PowerSchool did not disclose the number of affected schools, reports indicate that multiple organizations confirmed significant data breaches. The hackers obtained vast amounts of personal data belonging to both current and former students and teachers. Some companies reported the theft of all historical student and teacher data, as well as demographic data for all teachers and students, active and historical.

While not a ransomware attack, PowerSchool acknowledged paying the attackers to delete the stolen data. The incident also impacted school districts that no longer use PowerSchool’s services but had in the past. Other affected organizations include Menlo Park City School District, Rancho Santa Fe School District, and RootED Solutions from Boston. The breach has raised concerns about data security in the education sector, highlighting the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.
