Cloudflare, a well-known internet security company, has reported that they successfully thwarted a massive 5.6Tbps Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in October 2024, making it the largest attack of its kind ever recorded. The attack, originating from a Mirai botnet, involved 13,000 IP addresses and lasted a brief 80 seconds.

This recent incident underscores the escalating intensity and frequency of cyber threats, as attackers adapt their tactics to bypass defenses. Despite the sheer magnitude of the attack, Cloudflare’s automated detection and mitigation systems effectively neutralized the threat without any manual intervention, alerts, or performance disruptions. The company emphasized that the attack caused no damage to their systems.

Notably, the Mirai botnet, infamous for its disruptive capabilities, continues to evolve with various actors creating new variants since its source code leaked in 2017. These variants, including ‘gayfemboy’ and ‘Murdoc Botnet’, have been actively targeting organizations with large-scale DDoS attacks in recent times. Cloudflare’s successful defense against such a formidable attack highlights the critical role of advanced cybersecurity measures in safeguarding against evolving cyber threats.
