ICO Discovers Majority of People Hold onto Old Devices and Many Struggle with Data Deletion
Concerned about the personal data stored on your old devices? A recent report from the Information Commissioner’s Office reveals that one in five Brits avoid selling their old phones due to fears of data leaks. The study highlights that 75% of individuals retain old devices, with 71% emphasizing the importance of deleting personal information, yet 24% find the process challenging.
As the holiday season approaches, many will upgrade their devices, but for the 29% unsure of how to wipe data, various methods exist. From physical destruction to secure deletion software or factory resets, each option presents trade-offs. While physically destroying media doesn’t require special tools, it may not be viable for continued use or resale. Conversely, restoring to factory settings is simple yet may not offer the highest security.
Scott Butler, Executive Director of Recycle Your Electricals, notes the significance of data deletion, enabling safe resale of electronics post-Christmas. He advises following guidelines to remove data effectively and boost resale value. Additionally, exploring data removal software and tips for maximizing phone sales can aid in securing personal information and financial returns.
