AMD has acknowledged a microcode vulnerability that was accidentally revealed by Asus. Security researcher Tavis Ormandy discovered a BETA bios fix for a “microcode signature verification vulnerability” on Asus’ gaming motherboards, although AMD had not initially disclosed this issue. Ormandy expressed concern about the premature leak of the patch for a major upcoming CPU vulnerability. Microcode, essential for processor performance, instructs the processor on executing tasks. Following inquiries from the community, Asus amended the patch notes to remove references to AMD’s microcode problem. AMD confirmed the vulnerability, stating that exploiting it requires local admin access and malicious microcode. The company advised users to adhere to standard security practices and trust only reputable sources for system updates. A security bulletin with further details and mitigation options will be released by AMD. The affected processor models have not yet been disclosed.
