AWS Expands WorkSpaces Offering with New Workstation-Grade Instance Types
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled two new powerful cloud desktop offerings, GeneralPurpose.4xlarge and GeneralPurpose.8xlarge, catering to users with resource-intensive Windows workloads. The GeneralPurpose.8xlarge instance boasts 32 virtual CPUs, 128GB of memory, with a 175GB root volume and 100GB storage for user files. Ideal for developers, scientists, financial analysts, and engineers, these instances enable running demanding applications such as Visual Studio, IntelliJ, MatLab, and more.
The cost for the 32 vCPU model with Windows licensing is $590 per month, while the 16 vCPU model is priced at $295 monthly. Linux pricing details are yet to be disclosed. With an hourly rate option available for an additional fee, users can also opt for a BYOL (Bring Your Own License) model to save on costs.
While competitive with Azure and Google Cloud hourly rates, AWS’s new offering can be pricier for extended use compared to on-premises options. Users will still need a separate device to access these cloud desktops. In another update, AWS has enhanced its EC2 Image Builder to simplify the process of using existing Windows licenses with Amazon WorkSpaces by converting Microsoft Windows ISO files into Amazon Machine Images (AMIs).
