Nvidia’s much-anticipated RTX 5080 and 5090 graphics cards were launched recently and unsurprisingly, stocks sold out rapidly, in line with the rumors. The release saw chaos and high demand at retailers, with reports of long queues and even chaotic scenes in Japan. The scarcity of these GPUs has led to accusations of a ‘paper launch,’ suggesting limited inventory was available. Some retail stores implemented lotteries to manage sales, yet challenges persisted, leading to frustrated buyers resorting to extreme measures to secure a GPU. As a result, the only current option to acquire a Blackwell GPU is through purchasing a full PC, albeit at a high cost. The scarcity has also fueled scalpers, with exorbitant prices on auction sites. The situation advises caution and patience, urging consumers against supporting scalpers. Future shipments of RTX 5090 and 5080 remain uncertain, prompting attention towards upcoming releases from both Nvidia and AMD.
