Google announced that it successfully blocked 2.36 million malicious Android apps from entering the Play Store in 2024, along with banning 158,000 developer accounts that attempted to distribute malware and spyware. This marks an increase from the previous years, where 2.28 million apps were blocked in 2023 and 1.5 million in 2022. Google credits its success to the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which aided human reviewers in identifying harmful apps and taking swift actions to protect users. The company highlighted that 92% of human reviews were AI-assisted, allowing for quicker and more accurate responses in preventing harmful apps from reaching users. Malicious apps are often flagged by their excessive permissions, and Google emphasizes the importance of checking app permissions, downloads, and reviews before installing any apps. While Google works diligently to maintain the cleanliness of its app store, some dangerous apps may still slip through, making staying vigilant crucial for users’ cybersecurity.
