Google’s Messages app is gearing up to support emergency RCS messaging, which will allow users to share photos and videos over text with emergency services. Last year, Google confirmed that this feature was in the works and now, recent code findings suggest that progress is being made towards its implementation. Although the feature is not yet active, Google is laying the groundwork for its rollout, starting with support for the US and the 911 service. Currently, SMS contact with emergency services is limited in certain regions, but RCS will expand this capability, providing critical safety communications during emergencies. The upgrade, set to potentially go live in 2025, will enhance text support and enable the sharing of multimedia content. Initially available on Google Messages, support for emergency texting with RCS is expected to expand to other apps and countries. Furthermore, iPhone users will also benefit from this feature with the availability of RCS support on iPhones. The integration of emergency texting with RCS aims to improve communication efficiency during critical situations.
