The global tablet market experienced a significant growth of 9.2% in 2024, as reported by Canalys. Despite a slight 1% increase in tablet shipments in the first quarter, the market saw substantial quarterly increases of 18%, 11%, and 5.6% in the following quarters. This growth is attributed to a surge in consumer interest in affordable tablets, contrasted with the PC market, which only grew by 3.8% during the same period.
The positive trend in tablet sales in 2024 marks a welcomed change after a year of decline in 2023. Canalys highlighted that apart from 2020, 2024 was the only year to show growth in the tablet sector since at least 2016. Canalys Research Manager Himani Mukka expressed optimism for the industry’s future, noting a positive start to 2024 and anticipating further growth throughout the year.
Apple emerged as a significant player in the tablet market, with over 16,800 Apple tablets shipped in the fourth quarter alone. The iPad dominated with a market share of 42.3%, surpassing competitors like Samsung. Additionally, Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi collectively captured 13% of the market share in 2024.
Looking ahead, while more than half of channel partners anticipate continued growth in tablet shipments for 2025, Canalys projects a more constrained performance. The report also acknowledged the impact of commercial refresh cycles and a recovery in demand for tablets as the PC market transitions, indicating an optimistic outlook for the industry.
