Venezuela has reportedly implemented restrictions on over 20 VPN provider websites in response to President Maduro’s ban on TikTok due to lack of a local representative. This move has led to a significant surge in VPN sign-ups, with Proton VPN seeing a 1,600% increase in registrations. Digital rights group Ve Sin Filtro reported the blocking of VPN websites like Proton VPN, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN. The use of VPNs is crucial for bypassing internet restrictions in Venezuela. The government has a history of targeting circumvention tools, impacting citizens’ ability to access online content. Notably, Private Internet Access (PIA) remains operational amid these restrictions, with a 270% increase in website traffic from Venezuela. Additionally, the TikTok ban continues in Venezuela following the app’s failure to appoint a local representative, as reported by internet watchdog NetBlocks.
