Experts have raised concerns regarding the potential abuse of OpenAI’s ChatGPT service to launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. A cybersecurity researcher identified a vulnerability in ChatGPT’s API that allows users to send numerous URLs in a single request, leading to a flood of HTTP requests to the target website, causing a denial of service.
To prevent such abuse, the expert recommends OpenAI to impose limits on the number of URLs and prevent duplicate requests. Implementing rate-limiting measures could help mitigate potential misuse of the AI tool.
While efforts are being made to enhance security measures in generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to prevent malicious activities, researchers continue to explore ways to bypass these safeguards in a practice termed “GenAI jailbreaking.” Such actions highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring the ethical and safe usage of AI systems.
