In 2024, Microsoft led the way by acquiring 485,000 of Nvidia’s flagship Hopper chips, with Chinese companies Tencent and ByteDance (parent company of TikTok) following closely by purchasing around 230,000 chips each. This massive acquisition put Microsoft ahead of competitors like Meta, Amazon, and Google in the race for high-performance AI chips. The Chinese companies’ significant investments in AI technology showcase their determination to compete with American tech giants, despite challenges posed by trade restrictions. Microsoft’s strategic planning and forward-looking approach in data center infrastructure played a key role in their substantial chip acquisitions, highlighting the importance of anticipating growth in the tech industry. Despite efforts by other companies to develop their own custom silicon, Nvidia remained a strong player in the server hardware market, with AMD also making notable strides. This trend is expected to continue into 2025, shaping the landscape of the AI industry.
