A Chinese cybersecurity firm, Sichuan Juxinhe Network Technology Co., LTD., has been sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) due to its alleged connections to the hacking group Salt Typhoon. Salt Typhoon is recognized for a cyberattack on nine major US telecommunications companies, including Verizon and AT&T. The US Treasury stated that Sichuan Juxinhe had direct involvement in assisting the US telecommunication and internet service provider companies. The hackers accessed these networks by breaching a third-party tech support platform BeyondTrust, leading to a prolonged infiltration before being detected. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Adewale O. Adeyemo, emphasized the Treasury’s commitment to holding malicious cyber actors accountable for targeting American citizens, businesses, and government entities. This incident was followed by another cyberattack targeting the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS), responsible for screening foreign investments for national security risks. In a related event, a Chinese cybersecurity firm, Yongxin Zhicheng Technology Group, was previously sanctioned in January 2025 for its alleged ties to Flax Typhoon, a group responsible for compromising legally required broadband and communications backdoors utilized by US law enforcement for communication interception.
