Hackers have been discovered obtaining sensitive information from individuals to bypass Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, purchasing data directly from victims. iProov’s recent research revealed a sophisticated method involving the systematic collection of genuine identity documents and facial images by a dark web group, compensating victims for their data. While the group primarily operates in Latin America, similar patterns were observed in Eastern Europe. Chief Scientific Officer Andrew Newell cautioned against selling personal information, emphasizing the risk of providing criminals with complete identity packages for advanced impersonation fraud. iProov advocates for a multi-layered verification approach to combat identity fraud, necessitating real-time confirmation of human and correct person identity. This strategy aims to enhance security measures and thwart attacks on identity verification systems effectively.
