The European Union has approved €750 million to fund the establishment of AI supercomputers across seven locations in Spain, Italy, Finland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Germany, and Greece. This initiative is part of a larger €1.5 billion joint project, with half of the funding coming from the EU and the other half from member states. The goal is to rival US tech giants and create what EVP Henna Virkkunen calls an ‘AI continent.’ The chosen locations will host brand-new world-class AI-optimized supercomputers, aiming to double the EuroHPC computing capacity by 2025-2026. The EU is moving towards its vision of becoming the leading AI continent by promoting AI development in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing. Other member states have until February 2025 to submit AI proposals for consideration.
