Deutsche Telekom, in collaboration with an industrial consortium, has introduced the NeoCircuit Router, a sustainable initiative aiming to repurpose old smartphones into routers. The prototype device integrates reused components like processors and memory chips, striving for a circularity rate of up to 70%. This project, led by Dr. Henning Never, seeks to go beyond standard e-waste recycling, emphasizing the conservation of resources and financial benefits. The company set a target to achieve near-complete circularity for its technologies by 2030, aligning with industry trends promoting modular designs for longevity and repairability. Challenges include extracting glued components and proprietary processors. The NeoCircuit Router is scheduled to debut at the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. This initiative supports the broader sustainability efforts in the industry.
