The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has introduced strict regulations for the Marriott Hotel chain after three significant data breaches compromised the personal information of millions of customers worldwide. The breaches, occurring between 2015 and 2020, exposed details of over 344 million customers, including sensitive information like passport details and payment cards. The FTC’s ruling requires Marriott to enhance its data security measures by implementing encryption, access control, and incident response protocols. Additionally, the company must conduct biennial security assessments, promptly report any breaches, and offer customers the option to monitor and delete their personal data. The FTC imposed a $52 million penalty on Marriott for its negligent security practices and deceptive actions related to the breaches.
