Garmin has introduced the zūmo R1 radar system for motorbikes, which builds on its Varia bicycle radar technology to enhance situational awareness for motorcyclists. The system provides both audio and visual alerts to riders through headsets and sat-nav systems, along with handlebar-mounted lights that indicate approaching vehicles.

The zūmo R1 radar requires wiring into a motorcycle’s onboard battery and features rear-facing LED lights that change color based on the proximity of vehicles. Additionally, the system offers a smartphone app for customizing settings and monitoring approaching traffic. Priced at £519 / $599 / AU$1,099, the radar system is currently available for purchase.

While the technology may offer added safety benefits, some critics argue that it may be unnecessary and costly compared to traditional safety practices like using mirrors and performing shoulder checks. TechRadar will be covering the latest updates from CES 2025, including innovations in tech and gadgets.
