Globe Life, a prominent American insurance company, has disclosed that approximately 855,000 individuals were impacted by a recent ransomware cyberattack they experienced in mid-June 2024. Originally reported to affect 5,000 customers, after a thorough investigation, the final tally exceeded 850,000 victims. The unauthorized third parties behind the attack gained access to sensitive customer data, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and more, but financial information remained secure.
The attackers attempted to extort money for the stolen data; however, Globe Life stood firm and refused to comply with the demands. Instead, the company promptly reported the incident to federal law enforcement, cooperating fully with the investigation. Globe Life took further steps to notify the affected individuals and provide credit monitoring services to mitigate potential risks.
Fortunately, the cyber criminals did not disrupt the company’s systems or delete any files, ensuring that Globe Life’s operations remained unaffected. As a result, the company anticipates no significant impact on its business due to this breach, as all costs and expenses related to the incident will be covered by insurance. With an annual revenue exceeding $5 billion, Globe Life is a key player in the life and health insurance sector in the United States.
