Attackers have been found to be exploiting popular VPN apps to introduce malware and take control of infected devices, as reported by Google’s Managed Defense team. The malware, known as Playfulghost, is being distributed through SEO poisoning tactics, tricking users into downloading malicious software disguised as legitimate applications like LetsVPN. This backdoor malware shares similarities with Gh0st RAT, a known remote administration tool. Playfulghost allows attackers to conduct various malicious activities on infected devices, such as keylogging, screenshot capture, and file management. Users are advised to be cautious when downloading new software, even from reputable sources, and to regularly monitor their devices for any suspicious activity. A proactive approach, such as downloading software from official websites and running malware removal services, can help mitigate the risk of malware infections.
