Hackers hide malware into website images to go unnoticed

Criminals have been found hiding malware in images on trusted websites, as researchers warn of new sophisticated cyber threats emerging. At least two different hacker groups have been identified deploying VIP Keylogger and 0bj3ctivityStealer through large-scale campaigns. By embedding malicious code within images hosted on popular file sharing sites like archive.org, the attackers aim to evade detection and infect unsuspecting users’ computers. These attacks often start with phishing emails containing malicious Excel attachments exploiting an old bug to download harmful scripts. The use of Generative AI tools has enabled cybercriminals to craft convincing phishing tactics and deliver tailored payloads, increasing the risk of malware infections. Threat researchers have also uncovered a new RAT campaign leveraging HTML smuggling, indicative of evolving cyber threats.
