IBM has been awarded a contract to upgrade the Emergency Services Network (ESN) in Britain by the Home Office. This project aims to provide faster access to data, real-time video, and secure voice communications for over 300,000 emergency responders. The ESN will allow emergency service workers to coordinate support efficiently through sharing live data, imagery, and location updates, ultimately improving response times.

The Policing Minister, Dame Diana Johnson, will oversee the project to ensure its timely and cost-effective delivery, in light of previous rollout delays. IBM’s role as the ESN partner will enable responders to share GPS locations and critical information during emergencies, enhancing collaboration among police, fire, and ambulance services. The ESN is hailed as the next generation communication system that promotes coordination among emergency services, a model already implemented in countries like the US, Canada, and South Korea.

Rahul Kalia, IBM UK & Ireland Managing Director, emphasized the importance of delivering mission-critical services to enhance community safety. The seven-year ESN contract, with a potential two-year extension, will involve ecosystem partners such as Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, Frequentis, Exponential-e, and Palo Alto Networks. Additionally, EE has been selected to provide the mobile communications infrastructure for the project.
