House Committee Members Warn Apple and Google About Removing TikTok from App Stores
The House Committee has issued a warning to Apple and Google to be prepared to eliminate TikTok from their app stores. Lawmakers criticized TikTok for delaying the divestiture process, stating that the app has had over 233 days to address concerns regarding US national security.
Unless TikTok separates from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, by January 19, US companies will be prohibited from offering services related to the app. The Committee emphasized the need for TikTok to take immediate action to ensure national security and protect American users from potential Chinese Communist Party influence.
President Biden previously signed a bill imposing a ban on TikTok unless it changes ownership to a non-foreign adversary-controlled entity. Despite TikTok’s legal challenges, the efforts were rejected by the federal appeals court. The app aims to appeal to the Supreme Court in a bid to prevent the ban from taking effect.
Potential buyers for TikTok, including former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, are being considered. ByteDance reportedly prefers shutting down TikTok in the US rather than selling it. The future of the ban remains uncertain, especially with changing positions from former President Trump and current President Biden’s administration.
