A recent announcement by Japanese authorities has revealed a series of over 200 cyberattacks occurring between 2019 and 2024, with suspicions pointing towards the Chinese hacking group MirrorFace as the perpetrators. The attacks primarily targeted the government and infrastructure sectors in an attempt to steal sensitive national security and advanced technology data. The National Police Agency (NPA) has linked these attacks to MirrorFace, also known as Earth Kasha, which has previously targeted businesses and individuals. The group has now been observed conducting spear phishing campaigns aiming towards researchers and government officials by enticing them with fake documents related to US-China relations. These attacks involved sending malicious attachments through emails from stolen identities, raising concerns about Japan’s cybersecurity vulnerabilities amidst its recent efforts to enhance military capabilities and cyber defenses. The attacks on Japanese infrastructure, including government bodies and private companies, underscore the increasing risk of politically motivated cyberattacks in the nation. Notable firms like Casio, NTT Docomo, and Japan Airlines have also fallen victim to cyber threats, emphasizing the urgent need for bolstering cybersecurity measures in Japan’s state-owned infrastructure.
