NTT Docomo, the largest mobile carrier in Japan, faced a cyberattack in the form of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) on January 2, which disrupted services for around 12 hours affecting over 90 million subscribers. While key communication services remained unaffected, the attack resulted in the unavailability of the company’s website, news platforms, and mobile payment systems. The company has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused and is yet to confirm the perpetrators behind the attack, with speculation pointing towards a ransomware group. This incident adds to the growing trend of cyberattacks targeting telecommunication firms globally, following previous attacks on US firms by a Chinese state-sponsored group. The rise of politically-motivated cyberattacks, particularly through DDoS attacks, has been a significant concern in 2024, impacting critical infrastructure and utilities worldwide.
