Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been slapped with a hefty €251 million GDPR fine following a 2018 data breach that affected millions of users worldwide, with 3 million being EU-based. The breach involved malicious actors exploiting the ‘view as’ feature to steal access tokens and access sensitive user information. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, a prominent regulatory body in Europe, has been holding tech companies accountable for GDPR violations, including a previous record fine against Meta amounting to $1.3 billion for data mishandling. Despite the seemingly high fines, only a small percentage has been collected so far, raising questions about the effectiveness of these penalties.
