Meta reveals huge new 50,000km subsea cable project

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled its ambitious plans to construct a groundbreaking 50,000km subsea cable network that will link five continents across the globe. Dubbed Project Waterworth, this multibillion-dollar initiative is set to be the longest cable globally and is poised to revolutionize digital connectivity on a global scale. Led by VP for Network Engineering Gaya Nagarajan and Global Head of Network Investments Alex-Handrah Aimé, the cable will utilize cutting-edge technology to bolster capacity and speed.

Spanning countries such as the US, India, Brazil, and South Africa, among others, Project Waterworth aims to create new digital pathways to drive AI innovation worldwide. This project marks Meta’s latest endeavor in expanding its network infrastructure, following the development of 20 other cables in the past. The cable will navigate depths of up to 7,000m, traversing regions in Asia, Australasia, and south of Africa.

The enhanced connectivity from this subsea cable network is expected to not only fortify Meta’s network reliability but also spur technological advancements, particularly in nations like India. By facilitating increased access to high-speed connectivity, Meta is poised to foster growth and innovation on a global scale.
