Microsoft has filed a complaint in December 2024 against 10 anonymous defendants in Virginia district court for allegedly violating laws related to computer fraud and abuse, as well as federal racketeering. The complaint accuses the defendants of accessing Microsoft servers to create offensive content by stealing legitimate users’ API keys. The defendants allegedly developed a tool, de3u, to steal these API keys and bypass content filters on Azure OpenAI Service. As a result, Microsoft took swift action, pulling down a Github repository and seizing a related website. The case sheds light on the challenges tech companies face in safeguarding against illicit activities and the misuse of their services.
