Microsoft no longer holds exclusivity as OpenAI’s sole cloud infrastructure provider, although it remains a major investor and retains the right of first refusal. OpenAI’s Project Stargate, launched for US infrastructure, sees new partnerships with SoftBank and Oracle. The computing needs of OpenAI will now be shared between Microsoft and other providers, marking a significant shift from their exclusive partnership established in 2019. Despite this, Microsoft will continue to have access to OpenAI’s models for its Copilot AI tools and retain exclusivity on OpenAI’s APIs for its Azure cloud platform. Microsoft’s significant investment in OpenAI underscores its ongoing commitment, with OpenAI’s Stargate Project aiming to revolutionize AI infrastructure in the US with a $500 billion investment over four years.
