Lawmakers are set to discuss a new proposal by the Polish Council Presidency aimed at addressing privacy concerns regarding the EU child sexual abuse material (CSAM) scanning bill. The proposed bill, known as Chat Control, seeks to combat the spread of CSAM content online by scanning communications, but under the new Poland’s proposal, scanning would become voluntary. While some see this as a step forward in protecting encrypted communications, privacy experts like Patrick Breyer and Elina Eickstädt have raised concerns about potential issues with mass surveillance and restrictions on online anonymity. The proposal faces scrutiny as it heads for discussion by lawmakers, with doubts about whether it will gain sufficient support due to its perceived extreme measures.
