Nvidia says latest US restrictions on China AI chips will ‘stifle competition’

In a move to uphold national security and maintain dominance in AI technology, President Biden has unveiled new regulations aimed at restricting China’s access to advanced semiconductors used in AI technology. The ‘Export Control Framework for AI Diffusion’ establishes country-specific quotas on GPUs, while providing exceptions for cloud computing providers like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to build data centers abroad. These regulations, set to take effect in 120 days, come amidst concerns over China’s potential military use of advanced AI technologies. While groups like Americans for Responsible Innovation have praised the rules, China’s Commerce Ministry and Nvidia have criticized them for stifling competition and violating trade rules. This development underscores the ongoing strategic competition between the US and China in the realm of AI technology.
