Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, has announced plans to introduce a hands-free driving system in their R1T and R1S vehicles later this year. The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) will allow for autonomous driving capabilities similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature. The system will utilize on-board cameras and sensors to navigate predetermined routes. Rivian aims to further develop the technology to achieve SAE Level 3 “eyes-off” autonomy by 2026.

The company’s recent advancements in camera technology and sensor suite enhancements indicate a promising future for autonomous driving capabilities in Rivian vehicles. However, ensuring the functionality and legality of these features before widespread implementation will be crucial. By offering safer “hands-off” driving options, Rivian aims to avoid the pitfalls experienced by Tesla and prioritize customer satisfaction. This approach of gradual technological upgrades and measured promises seeks to build trust with consumers and avoid overpromising capabilities that may not be fully realized.
