T-Mobile is offering its customers the chance to beta-test the cellular Starlink service provided by SpaceX. The program, set to begin early next year, allows users to send text messages in areas with poor cellular reception by connecting to SpaceX’s satellites. Customers can register for the beta program for free, giving them access to satellite-based messaging and offering a glimpse into a future with fewer cellular dead zones. The service, known as “direct to cell,” uses SpaceX’s satellites as orbiting cell towers to provide coverage in rural and remote areas, covering 500,000 square miles in the US. The technology has shown promising results in terms of download speeds and signal strength, with potential for emergency messaging services during natural disasters. Although the initial focus will be on text messaging, voice and data support are planned for the future. The service aims to be more user-friendly than existing satellite messaging services, requiring no specific phone positioning and operating similarly to traditional messaging platforms.
