European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has ruled that targeting EU citizens based on their political views is illegal. The EU Commission was found guilty of using sensitive personal data to target citizens with ads related to their political views. This decision comes after a complaint by digital rights group Noyb concerning targeted ads linked to the Chat Control proposal. This proposal aims to scan private communications to prevent the spread of child sexual abuse material. The EU Commission’s targeted ad campaign on social media to promote the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation (CSAR) proposal was found to have breached GDPR rules. Noyb welcomed the EDPS decision, emphasizing the illegal nature of using political preferences for ads. Despite this, the Chat Control proposal has faced opposition within the EU, with concerns about surveillance and security risks.
