Apple’s latest iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 models, along with recent iPads and MacBooks, come equipped with Thread radios, a wireless protocol designed for smart homes. Vividh Siddha, Director of software engineering at Apple and president of Thread Group, highlighted two key benefits of Thread technology.

Thread offers a low-power, low-bandwidth solution for devices to communicate in the smart home ecosystem, complementing Wi-Fi. By having Thread radios in iPhones, users can build a smart home based on the Matter protocol. This enables early adopters to create seamless automations without the need for additional hubs. Additionally, the Thread radio in iPhones can act as a backup during power outages, allowing continued smart home functionality.

Despite some current challenges with smart home standards like Matter, industry experts anticipate improvements by 2025. Tobin Richardson, CEO of Connectivity Standards Alliance, and Vividh Siddha agree that ongoing efforts aim to enhance reliability and ensure smoother smart home experiences in the future. While the ideal seamless smart home setup may still be evolving, Apple’s inclusion of Thread radios in its devices ensures they are prepared for future advancements in smart home technology.
