Virtavo, a provider of home security solutions, is under fire for allegedly compromising the privacy of users by exposing sensitive personal data. Researchers at Cybernews discovered a sizeable unprotected database containing 3GB of personal information and iPhone telemetry linked to an app called Home V, used to manage Virtavo security cameras. The exposed data, which included phone numbers, IP addresses, firmware versions, and other device-related details, could potentially identify camera owners. With over 8.7 million records stored on the server, it’s estimated that at least 100,000 users have been impacted by this breach, primarily in China but with a global reach. The real-time updating of data poses a significant risk, enabling cybercriminals to exploit the information for malicious purposes such as targeted attacks and identity theft. Following the researchers’ alert, both Virtavo and the Chinese Computer Emergency Response Team were notified, leading to the closure of the compromised server. However, the possibility of unauthorized access before shutdown remains uncertain. This incident underscores the critical importance of data security in an increasingly interconnected digital world. via Cybernews.
