President Trump recently signed an executive order to establish a new advisory group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Spearheaded by tech innovator Elon Musk, DOGE’s mission is to modernize government software and digital infrastructure.
In his inaugural address, President Trump emphasized the importance of restoring competence and effectiveness to the federal government through DOGE. The group’s co-leader, Vivek Ramaswamy, was expected to work alongside Elon Musk in leading the department, but has decided to run for Governor of Ohio instead.
Unlike an official federal executive department, DOGE does not possess the full powers required for extensive reorganization and cuts in the job and budget. However, the executive order outlines plans for software modernization and advancing government IT systems, while also establishing a temporary organization known as the US DOGE Service Temporary Organization. This temporary organization, set to end in 2026, will focus on Trump’s “18-month DOGE agenda.”
Elon Musk has proposed ambitious cuts of $2 trillion through downsizing the workforce and reducing waste under DOGE, despite skepticism from experts. The executive order has faced legal challenges, with three lawsuits alleging violations of transparency requirements and advisory committee procedures.
