US Age verification laws put your privacy at risk – and “VPNs are not a solution”

The increasing US age verification laws pose a threat to people’s data privacy and security, with even the most secure VPN services not offering a foolproof solution. Experts at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) caution about the risks associated with collecting more user data for mandatory online age checks. States like Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee have recently enforced such laws, with more states expected to follow suit. The laws aim to protect children online but raise concerns about potential privacy breaches and surveillance. Popular adult site Pornhub has even blocked access in regions with intrusive age verification checks. While VPNs can help disguise internet activity, they are not infallible and may become less effective as enforcement methods improve. Ultimately, these laws may undermine online anonymity and user safety, impacting everyone including the very individuals they aim to safeguard.
