Citizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo are turning to VPN services in large numbers due to restrictions on accessing TikTok and other apps. Proton VPN, a leading VPN service, reported a 7000% increase in sign-ups starting from February 1, 2025, amidst rumors of internet blocks. The situation escalated after the M23 rebel group gained control of Goma. The exact cause of the blockage remains unclear, but social media access issues are being reported. Authorities have criticized social platforms, and VPNs are being used to bypass restrictions. The Google Play Store has also been restricted to prevent downloading VPN apps. Proton VPN recommends alternative tools like Tor Browser in case access to VPN apps is further limited.
