Western Digital, a prominent data storage company, has been ordered to pay a total of $553 million within seven days due to a patent infringement case. Initially fined $316 million in October 2024 for infringing data encryption patents owned by SPEX Technologies, an additional $237 million in interest was added last month by District Judge James Selna. Concerns were raised by the judge over a potential restructuring move by WD to avoid the payment. This penalty comes amidst WD’s impending split, separating its NAND flash storage business and hard drive operations. The split is expected to be finalized on February 21. SPEX expressed uncertainty over which entity would bear the financial liability. Furthermore, Western Digital is facing another patent infringement lawsuit from Germany’s MR Technologie. Despite multiple attempts, Western Digital has not provided a comment on the SPEX case. (Source: The Register)
