The global TV and video streaming industry is now a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing aviation and data centers according to a report by InterDigital and Futuresource. With an estimated 54 million tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2024, equivalent to the annual emissions of 11.7 million cars, the industry is being driven by increasing demand for entertainment and technology like 4K TVs and smartphones. Efforts to reduce emissions are progressing, with advancements in AI-based technologies and remote production methods showing promise. However, industry-wide collaboration is needed to address challenges and achieve sustainability goals. Lionel Oisel, from InterDigital, emphasizes the need for more action to mitigate the impact of the TV and video sector on the environment.
