The rise of open source software (OSS) has established it as a lucrative industry, with investments reaching a remarkable $7.7 billion annually worldwide. Research conducted by Github, the Linux Foundation, and Harvard University revealed that the majority of investments (86%) are in the form of human labor, with only 14% in direct financial contributions. Businesses are actively supporting OSS, with a median organizational spend of over $520,000, divided between labor and financial contributions. The study identified areas of improvement regarding transparent investment practices and emphasized the need for better monitoring and reporting to ensure the sustainability of OSS. Despite certain information gaps, the research underscores the pivotal role OSS plays in fostering innovation and encourages enhanced tracking and transparency for future development.
