Apple has reached a settlement of $95 million in a class-action lawsuit regarding privacy complaints related to Siri. Device owners reported that mentions of certain brands in private conversations were later used in targeted advertisements on their Apple devices. The lawsuit, Lopez et al v. Apple Inc, centered around Siri being unintentionally activated during phone calls, leading to the disclosure of bits of conversation to advertisers. The affected period ranges from September 17, 2014, to December 31, 2024. Tens of millions of individuals could receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device. Apple, however, denied any wrongdoing in court. The settlement, equivalent to just nine hours of profit for the tech giant, demonstrates how such lawsuits are becoming a common cost of doing business for big tech companies. Conversely, Google is facing a similar lawsuit over its Voice Assistant in the San Jose Federal Court.
