A Twitter user recently shared what was claimed to be a zero-day exploit for the popular file compression software 7-Zip, but the software’s creator, Igor Pavlov, was quick to dismiss it as a hoax generated by AI. Pavlov explained on Sourceforge.net that the exploit code was likely a result of AI hallucination, as it contained inaccuracies about the software’s functions.

Pavlov clarified that the exploit targeting a non-existent vulnerability in the LZMA decoder of 7-Zip was false, as there is no RC_NORM function in the decoder. He emphasized that 7-Zip being open source allows for verification of his claims. While the Twitter user spreading the rumor remains unnamed, their actions seem like a ploy for attention on social media rather than a genuine security threat.

In conclusion, the 7-Zip exploit incident appears to be a minor issue blown out of proportion, and Pavlov’s response sheds light on the importance of verifying information in the age of online misinformation.
