Fitness apps have been found to actively share users’ personal data with third parties, potentially compromising privacy. Research conducted by Surfshark revealed that 12 out of 15 top fitness apps engage in this practice, with Strava and Fitbit being the most data-hungry, collecting a significant amount of user data. Free apps were found to share more data compared to paid apps, emphasizing the need to assess privacy implications. These apps collect a range of data points including device locations, emails, user IDs, and health information, which are then shared for advertising purposes. Surfshark suggests opting for paid subscriptions and questioning the necessity of data permissions in order to protect user privacy.
