Google has recently launched a new tool aimed at challenging Microsoft Teams in the online collaboration arena. This tool allows administrators to migrate Microsoft Teams channels data to Google Chat, offering customization options such as date ranges. The migration tool was first announced in December 2024 and is now available for all Google Chat users. By making the transition process smoother, Google aims to attract more businesses to its platform.

The ‘Chat migration’ feature in Google Chat enables administrators to seamlessly import Teams data by connecting to Microsoft accounts, uploading migration maps and identity maps, and setting message migration start dates. This tool also allows for delta migration, generating reports on completed migrations, and requires Google super admins and Microsoft Teams Global Administrators to take action.

Ongoing developments in the online collaboration space, coupled with potential antitrust issues for Microsoft Teams, highlight the significance of Google’s strategic move. Additionally, Google’s interoperability with third-party services like Mio further enhances its competitive edge. This news coincides with the regulatory challenges Microsoft Teams faces, potentially affecting subscription prices.
