The HDMI Forum Inc has officially announced the HDMI 2.2 specification at CES 2025, revealing its capability to provide up to 96Gbps bandwidth and support a resolution of 16K. This new specification follows HDMI 2.1, which was introduced in 2017. HDMI, an abbreviation for High Definition Media Interface, is a commonly-used port for audio-visual devices such as TVs, monitors, soundbars, and gaming consoles. HDMI 2.2 will support resolutions ranging from 4K to 16K, with a bandwidth of 96gbps.
In addition to the specification reveal, HDMI also unveiled the Ultra96 HDMI cable that supports 96gbps and HDMI 2.2 features, set to be available in 2025. HDMI 2.2 will introduce the HDMI Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to enhance synchronization between audio and video devices. The new specification will be accessible to supporting manufacturers in the first half of 2025.
Regarding the implications for TVs and gaming devices, while HDMI 2.2 promises higher resolutions like 8K and 16K, the implementation into devices may take time. Given the historical timeline of HDMI 2.1, it could be several years before HDMI 2.2 is widely integrated into devices. The popularity of 8K displays remains limited due to pricing and content availability. Despite challenges, HDMI 2.2 is anticipated to shape the future of TVs and gaming, offering enhanced capabilities once fully utilized.
