Top UK retailers are failing to meet email security standards, leaving consumers vulnerable to phishing attacks, according to a recent report by Proofpoint. The study indicates that 40% of leading online retailers in the UK have not implemented strict secure email protocols, potentially exposing customers to email fraud risks. With an anticipated increase in online spending of £800 million, cybercriminals are poised to take advantage of the holiday season shopping rush.

The research highlights the importance of implementing Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC) protocols, with only 60% of retailers surveyed having adopted the highest level of protection. Alarmingly, 7% of retailers have no DMARC protection at all, leaving their domains susceptible to impersonation and fraud.

As the holiday shopping season approaches, cybercriminals are expected to capitalize on the surge in digital transactions through tactics like fraudulent emails and phishing scams. Proofpoint advises consumers to be cautious of offers from unknown sources, avoid reusing passwords, use password managers, enable multi-factor authentication, and manually enter official website addresses instead of clicking on links in emails.

In addition to email security risks, shoppers should also beware of smishing (phishing via SMS) and social media scams targeting bargain-hunters during the festive season. Researching unfamiliar websites, reading customer reviews, and staying vigilant online are crucial to safeguarding personal information and financial details.
